Held during the 2018 National Convention, SHPE’s annual Pre-College Conference is an exciting two-day event designed to engage and motivate high school students around STEM activities. Students participate in hands-on workshops that allow them to act and think like an engineer or STEM professional. The workshops are presented by our professional member volunteers and corporate partners.
On Friday, there will be multiple workshops to increase self-efficacy and interest in STEM subjects while exposing students to STEM degrees and careers. SHPE members empower participating students to start SHPE Jr. chapters at their schools if they do not already have one. This ensures that their Jr. chapter receives access to SHPE’s network, scholarship offerings, and funding opportunities for future programs and events on their own campus. This year we are excited to have the teams from Navy Civilian, The Boeing Company, and U.S. Army.
On Saturday, students visit Cleveland State University to tour the campus and participate in the Engineering Design Challenge. The EDC will give students the opportunity to become entrepreneurs. In the course of designing a product and pitching their company, participants will learn and implement valuable skills needed to successfully manage a project and work within a structured team.
Please note that the Pre-College Conference requires separate registration from the general convention. Register here.
